2018 – The Year of the Older Adult in Marin

On January 23, 2018, the Board of Supervisors approved a resolution proclaiming 2018 the Year of the Older Adult in Marin, kicking off a year-long celebration of the social, cultural and economic contributions of Marin’s older adults as well as raising awareness of the diverse needs of our aging population. Each month focuses on a topic of concern for seniors. A calendar of events scheduled for 2018 Year of the Older Adult, can be found on the Marin Villages website. We hope to encourage participation by providing more detailed information about these monthly activities. Below is information on February’s topic – Age-Friendly Communities.

The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities launched in April 2012, operates under the auspices of the World Health Organization of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program whose mission is to encourage states, cities, towns and counties to prepare for the rapid aging of the US population by paying increased attention to the environmental, economic and social factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults. By designating 2018 as the Year of the Older Adult, the Board of Supervisors also declared its goal for Marin County, as an entity, to achieve Age-Friendly status.

Several communities in Marin, Sausalito, Corte Madera, Fairfax, Novato and San Rafael have earned Age-Friendly designations, while others are working toward certification. To be a true Age-Friendly community requires collaboration.  Marin Villages is a natural partner in assisting communities achieve Age-Friendly goals such as improved personal mobility, safety from injury, particularly in the home, and the provision of social, cultural and educational activities that bring people together. Local Villages can help by making sure their Age-Friendly committees are aware of all the ways, large and small, Marin Villages supports their efforts to seniors can thrive.
